South Platte River Trail Scenic Byway

Like many towns on the eastern plains, Julesburg is full of history ranging from Native American history to mining history. The South Platte River Trail, which passes through Julesburg, is Colorado's shortest byway, but has many historical highlights to make up for it. The byway is 19 miles long and takes about 30 minutes to travel.

The byway is on the main route that thousands of 59ers took to get to the west for gold. This highway was the Lincoln Highway. Later, it became the first automobile highway to go across the country.

Also along this byway is the only Pony Express Stop in Colorado. This stop was at Fort Sedgwick, which was built in 1865. It was here where 15-year old Buffalo Bill Cody signed up to be a Pony Express rider. For those interested in Native American history, the byway is also home to the battleground where Cheyenne, Sioux and Arapahoe warriors attacked a US cavalry unit to avenge those who were killed in the Sand Creek Massacre.

There are a few opportunities for recreation along the byway. Hunters and anglers can enjoy the many areas for hunting and fishing in the Sedgwick Bar and Julesburg State Wildlife Areas. The South Platte River is home to world-class fishing and the best tailwater fishing in the state. The diversity of birdlife is northeastern Colorado's claim to fame, and many birds can be seen when traveling the byway. Hiking and biking the byway is another popular activity.
