Nestled in a box canyon, Telluride is where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank, along the San Miguel River in the midst of the San Juan Mountains. A small town surrounded by high mountains, served by an airport and highways that pass through magnificent 14,000-foot peaks from Durango, Ouray and Cortez. The entire town of Telluride is a National Historic District.

Telluride Ski Resort offers challenging runs for the expert and novice skier. The ski area has some very long and mogul strewn runs with soft powder most of the time and is accessible from downtown.

In summer and fall, Telluride turns into a cultural center with a series of weekend and week-long festivals devoted to a full range of arts activities. Festival themes include Jazz, Bluegrass, Chamber Music, Film, and much more. The Jazz Festival is held in July; the respected Film Festival in early September. Fall brings the Hang Gliding Festival. Anglers fish in the San Miguel and Dolores rivers, in Trout Lake (12 miles south of town), or in Woods Lake (10 miles north). Rainbow and brook trout are found, with the occasional cutthroat. From the end of the canyon, in town, a short hike will take you to Bridal Veil Falls and Ingram Falls. Walk up the jeep road to the falls and you'll also see the old hydro electric plant hanging from the top of the ridge. For a short scenic drive, take the Alta Lakes Road south of Telluride by Highway 145. Forest Road #632 leads four miles to the old mining camp of Alta and lakes with fishing.

Rico is a restful mountain haven with unlimited outdoor recreation along Highway 145 between Telluride and Dolores. Rico has two restaurants each has its own distinctive personality and type of food. The Argentine Bar & Grille it dishes out 5-star cuisine and full bar menu at affordable prices in a comfy, small-town atmosphere. The Rico Theater & Cafe on Main Street. There are many of historic buildings in Rico some dating back to the mining boom of the 1880's. Railroad enthusiasts will appreciate the Rio Grande Southern water tank that still stands along the well-preserved railroad grade at the original Rico depot site alongside the Dolores River.
